While reading about the notion of multiple time lines I was reminded of "Reservoir Dogs" and even "Memento." While I believe linearity can be eliminated it has to be safely and skillfully executed. While the two movies mentioned above are the only examples I've come across of non linear timeline films that were well executed, I believe there is a lot of room for error.
