I took the image above with my phone the other day. I had left the shower running while I went to grab fresh clothes, waiting for the water to heat. When I came back I discovered that steam had filled the room at the perfect moment, just as the setting sun was finding its way through the cracks of the bathroom’s blinds, intensifying the visibility of the rays as they peaked through. This picture doesn’t come close to doing the moment justice, but it had me thinking about the film I’m working on. Something as basic as a window blind with a bit of light peaking through is enough to trigger a memory, whether specific or half-remembered. Here it was specific; I think the images speak for themselves as far as the connection here.
Maybe I’m reading too much into such a simple action, but for me, looking out of the blinds of the window is an inherently longing action; for what, it’s not always clear. If it’s nice outside, maybe the desire is just to be outside. Or maybe wanting to be outside is part of a larger condition of confinement. Especially in the winter, it’s easy to get a little stir crazy. If the temperature is -40 with wind chill, as it was the particular day these images were shot, really stir crazy (if only out of the necessity to stay warm). But what happens when you mix stir crazy with an omnipresent and very real craziness, and when you can’t escape the home? No matter the weather, you’ll be looking out the window quite a bit.
